The Rise of Islam as a Religion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Rise of Islam as a Religion - Essay Example Though he received a rejection from the first time but with time, he started to get the followers through his teachings. His main teachings based on equality (Fordham, 2013). Q2. Compare and contrast the caliphates of Damascus and Baghdad (socially and politically) how did the Caliphate serve, to continue Muhammad’s legacy? What were some of the cultural, technological and academic achievement made during caliphate? I support the opinion of the third students, who states that it led to the spread of the Islamic religion and changed the political rule from democracy to monarchy. However, in those times of the Caliphate, there was resistance from the non-believers. The spread of Islam enabled Baghdad to become the city of the Caliphate and there was the introduction of technology, which contributed to the Muslim culture, the introduction of writing has influenced the current knowledge on writing such as arithmetic and medicine, as well as astronomy (Fordham, 2013). The second student states that, initially, there were many religions that believed in many gods, the spread of Islam through Muhammad changed everything as his idea of peacemaking and that strengthen the military work. The economic status of the nation was also improved since everything was done under to always of religion; hence, there was a reduced exploitation practice. Muhammad became politically powerfully when he went to Medina, he used his power to have what he wanted; therefore, through his power, he managed to write a new constitution (Fordham, 2013). I agree with third students, who states that indeed Muhammad was a charismatic man invented new ideas based on the Islamic religion and influence the social life of people in Bedouin.

Critically analyse the concept of fair and equitable treatment in Essay

Critically analyse the concept of fair and equitable treatment in investment treaties, taking into account recent investment - Essay Example A nice starting point for a good discussion is that the term or phrase â€Å"fair and equitable treatment† is the minimum standard and is included in most international investment agreements (IIAs). There are slight variations to this legal standard, such as the phrase â€Å"equitable and reasonable treatment† but both of the phrases are almost always made in reference to international laws. Admittedly, even this short phrase is subject to different interpretations depending on the circumstances and one's viewpoint. What is lacking in most of treaties is the legal concept of erga omnes like in Portugal v Australia to attain the goal of FET.2 It is the main purpose of this paper to explore further how this relatively simple legal phrase is used today to implement investment treaties. What is quite troubling to see is the prevalent use of the concept of special laws to interpret treaties in favour of one party only – the investors.3 Discussion Fair and equitable tr eatment is becoming more important these days. ... The only issue supposedly before any trade arbitral tribunal is to decide whether in all circumstances the conduct at issue is indeed fair and equitable.4 Definition: â€Å"Fair and equitable† treatment, narrowly speaking, refers to investments.5 It is commonly used in international treaty law and â€Å"protects investors' legitimate and reasonable expectations;6 it also protects against an arbitrary or capricious treatment, bad faith, coercion and harassments.† Investors negotiating with countries are very often understandably worried that their investments might be seized as part of nationalisation schemes, or that a change of regimes might cause loans to be defaulted upon or that corruption might force them to engage in more frequent bribery as seen across the developing world. The main consideration is the safety of investments by making sure agreements offer the contracting parties increased security and protection.7 Investors prefer safety before any profits are c onsidered. The investor's legitimate security expectations are the dominant elements of this treaty standard.8 Some experts believe FET guarantees a treatment beyond the minimum standards required under international laws. But this paper will analyse fair and equitable treatment (FET) a little bit broadly. It is fair enough for investors to receive fair and equitable treatment but what about the host governments, citizen stakeholders, NGOs, labour and the poor? This paper will thus look at fair and equitable treatment in that broader fashion. By merely looking at â€Å"fair and equitable treatment† rulings, it could give a false impression that treaties were fairly implemented and negotiated when they are in fact deeply divisive, controversial,

Gender Representation Essay Example for Free

Gender Representation Essay How stereotypical are the representations of Gender in my chosen texts? My chosen texts are The Inbetweeners , X Factor and BBC News. All three texts represent gender in different ways yet I wouldnt say that any of them truly represent both genders in stereotypical ways. In The Inbetweeners the main characters are portrayed in a very stereotypical way at first glance, they are boystrous and objectify women in the crude way in which they speak about them. Yet when you look deeper into their characters you realise that they are not typical at all. The females in the show are typical in a sense that they are pretty, well dressed and are purely there for the male gaze. It is this male gaze that ultimately makes them more powerful than the males in the series as they have the power to either sleep with, or not sleep with the males which takes all control away from the men which is not a typical trait. When you think of a typical male in tv they are strong, handsome and in control, this is not always evident in The Inbetweeners which supports the masculinity in crisis theory which states that males are no longer the dominant sex in modern society. Women may be objectified still but they use their sex appeal to there advantage and get their own way leaving the males powerless. You do how ever have the very typical character of Jays dad which is a hyperbolic example of a male as he passes gas, swears and acts in a completely innaproriate way for the comedic value. The X Factor has a very contrasting representation of gender. In one way the male characters are very stereotypical as they have the power to say yes or no to the acts as judges. Males are stereotypically known for being in a position of power so this is a typical representation. Yet you have Dermot Oleary who is very masculine in his appearance yet is very caring and sympathetic for the contestants. This is not typical as males arent usually shown to have a caring side or emotions as that is left for the women. This again supports the theory of masculinity in crisis. The Female Judges do not have a very typical representation. They are in a position of authority and power and to an extent in the new series do have more power than the male judges as they are more forceful and get their point across better. This is not typically the way women are represented fitting into the theory of Masculinity in crisis. The BBC news is very much like the X Factor. When the males are the anchors they are in a position of power and knowledge which is a typical representation. They appear to the nation as a pillar of knowledge and the public give them a vast amount of respect which is typical of the representation of men. When the women are anchors they too are looked upon as a pillar of knowledge and are given the same respect which does not fit into the typical representation of a female.

A Freudian Reading of Hamlet and Titus Andronicus Essay -- comparison

A Freudian Reading of Hamlet and Titus Andronicus  Ã‚     Ã‚   In 1900 the eminent Austrian psychologist Sigmund Freud produced a seminal work entitled The Interpretation of Dreams which contains the idea that dreams allow psychic exploration of the soul, that dreams contain psychological meanings which can be arrived at by interpretation. Freud states that â€Å"every dream will reveal itself as a psychological structure, full of significance, and one which may be assigned to a specific place in the psychic activities of the waking state.† According to Freud’s original formulations dreams have two contents, a manifest content which is the dream that one actually experiences and a latent content which is the meaning of the dream as discovered by interpretation. Literature can be thought of in the same manner, as a figment of the imagination whose underlying truth can be discovered through interpretation. A piece of literature may have a truth to tell but it can may remain hidden to us until such time as we interpret its signs. According to Freud there are three routes into the unconscious; dreams, parapraxes (or slips of the tongue) and jokes, and it is evident that psychoanalysis asks us to pay a lot of attention to language, in puns, slips of the tongue etc. This suggests how psychoanalysis is directly related to literary criticism, since both kinds of analysis focus on close readings of language. Therefore, by understanding Freudian theory, we can gain a deeper understanding of literature. This essay attempts to discover how Freud’s psychoanalytical accounts of human nature can bring us to a deeper understanding of the family relationships at work in Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Titus Andronicus. Comparison of Discipline Models Essay

EDU-450 Classroom Management A Comparison of Discipline Models A Comparison of Discipline Models In comparing Wong’s theory and Kagan, Kyle, and Scott’s theory, they both give pupils the independence to do what they think is appropriate for them, and the educators and parents incorporate them in making the rules. The Win-Win approach fixes the situation by allowing the students to choose a better approach to the issue. Morrish’s Real- Discipline approach believes that students do not know how to behave properly and responsible when they begin school. This theory believes that students only learn self-discipline through experience. This theory requires assistance in the required behavior. Wong’s Theory: I do agree with Wong’s theory. I agree with it because it is a great idea to give students independence in making choices in the way they are disciplined for breaking the rules. Students need to know that they have a say in how they will be disciplined for their actions. This will give the students a sense of how you must follow the rules or be reprimanded for them. Morrish’s Theory: I believe in Morrish’s behavior theory because the student is given a chance to correct their misbehavior. This theory allows the students to see that they have a chance to correct their behavior before disciplinary action is taken. This gives the students a sense of responsibility to choose to do the right thing. Kagan, Kyle, and Scott’s Theory: I agree with Kagan, Kyle, and Scott’s theory in the aspect that it is beneficial for teachers to develop ways that will disengage disruptive behavior in the classroom. Teachers must be able to distinguish which behaviors the students are engaged in and be able to appropriately correct the situation because the student’s behavior will escalate if not handled correctly. Strengths Weaknesses Advantages Disadvantages Wong’s Pragmatic Classroom: Ensures that all students understand their duties and learn to follow all class procedures automatically. (Charles, 2008). >This theory sets clear and concise procedures on what the students must know and do on a daily basis > This theory allows teachers to stay consistent with the procedures in her classroom. > The students are learning how to be responsible. > Wong’s theory gives the teacher a format in which to follow in order to be able to manage her classroom. > When rules are broken, the teacher has no alternative but to discipline the student. >Wong’s theory provides the students with a safe environment. > The students know what to expect on a daily basis with no surprises. > This theory gives the students a since of importance in helping solving discipline issues. > The teacher may have trouble anticipating the individual students’ needs and behaviors. >The teacher may fall short of recognizing the student’s potential growth. Morrish’s Real- Discipline Theory: Teach students how to behave properly and insist they comply with directions. (Charles 2008). >This theory gives courage for student to persevere as well as work through tasks which are not particularly pleasing (Charles, 2008). > This theory makes the students alert of their surroundings and what is happening. >Morrish’s overemphasis’ the disciplinary power of the teacher. >Morrish’s theory places assumptions that low self-esteem students are subject to getting in trouble in school. > Places assumption that teachers  who spend time to motivate students are wasting time. >This theory teaches students how to behave in the correct manner. > This theory teaches students to be courtesy and considerate of others. > The students will learn to follow a set of rules and limitations before being disciplined. > Personal discipline is the focus of this theory. >Morrish’s discipline theories purpose is to make students do what they do not want to do. >Morrish believes students should not be praised or rewarded in a continuous manner. Kagan, Kyle, and Scott’s Win- Win Discipline: Establish same- side cooperation with students and use â€Å"structure† to prevent and address student misbehavior (Charles, 2008). >Teachers and students work together to decide on behavior issues. > This theory is to help teachers recognize the seven positions in which discipline arises. >This goal helps students learn a lifelong responsible behavior. >The teacher must first recognize the student’s behavior and apply the appropriate disciplinary action. >This theory allows the teacher to help the student understand their behavior and help them determine a better avenue to handle the situation. >This theory allows the students to achieve goals they set for themselves. > This theory, if not used properly, can cause serious altercations in the classroom between teacher and student. Race, Identity, And Social Norms Essay - 1280 Words

The discussions of race, identity, and social norms begins to seem almost unavoidable in a society that is subjected to disproportionate ideas of equality. We tend to only recognize racism that occurs in the United States, ignoring the fight for acceptance of those of African descent around the world. The articles, â€Å"Being African in India: ‘We are seen as demons’† ‘Shock in India Over Mob Attack On Tanzanian Student† both effectively highlight the presence of race as the determinant of the choices you make, the way you are viewed by others, and ultimately the way in which you are treated in society. It is important to analyze race on a level that goes beyond just the surface, keeping in mind that the African Diaspora did not begin with the slave trades and that Africa was at the forefront of human civilization. Slavery indeed has had an enormous impact on the ever-changing construction of race. Michael Gomez brings attention to the major shifts we have seen involving race as it pertains to slavery. In ancient Egypt slavery was not initially racially codified. Europeans believed that color was caused by the sun and did not relate blackness with inferiority. Africans were actually viewed favorably and were treated as equal. In Chapter 3: Africans and the Islamic World, we also see a change in the treatment of slaves. In ancient Muslim societies they made use of slaves who were African, Slavic, and Caucasian. Slaves in Muslim societies were to be treated with dignity, wereShow MoreRelatedDu Bois : An Important American Thinker1744 Words   |  7 PagesW. E. B.
